Now that skype lets you record calls, is there still a point in using a mixer?

I like the finer control the mixer gives you. If you are using/recording Skype on the same machine that you are doing most of your recording, when you adjust settings it can be adjusting settings for the entire recording session.

I've not done a lot of 'live stuff', as most of what I do involves multiple takes and whatnot, but I like the being able to adjust Skype on its own.

Recording calls with Skype is horrible.

You're definitely going to want a decent-quality speaker, which you can heft up to the mic for sound-effects. (without getting a hernia in the process)
